Signal Youth Studio – City of Melbourne
Signal is a creative studio for young people aged 13 to 20. At Signal, you can work alongside professional artists in a collaborative way. Located in the heart of the city, Signal is a place for making, showing, inspiring and developing Melbourne's creative talent – in every medium. Signal is open to young people from all walks of life and ability – you don't need any experience to take part in Signal.
The Signal and Outer Urban Projects partnership began during Signal 37, a 10 day creative arts program for young people in the 2013 summer school holidays (and during Signal 37 in 2012 in the team’s former roles with A.R.A.B). During Signal 37, OUP delivered in an emerging artists sound, music, text and spoken word hub and an emerging artist dance lab providing an opportunity for 30 young and emerging artists to develop new repertoire and performance work.
OUP and Signal provided an opportunity for both organisations to bring culturally diverse young people into a state of the art facility to collaborate and showcase high quality performance work. This partnership has continued, with OUP having the opportunity to run weekly studio residency at Signal for emerging artists to develop their performance work to gain employment and training opportunities outside of OUP. Through this partnership, skills and expertise are exchanged, resources are shared and emerging artists from the outer northern suburbs of Melbourne gain equal access to a space and facility in the City of Melbourne that properly supports their energy, ideas and work.
